Light Up Your Weekend With These 14 Bits Of Wonderful Dog News
A home for Rodney, special milestones and smiling dogs
A lot happens in a typical week of looking after the dogs and I like to focus on the good stuff. There is enough bad news in the world to grab your attention so I share some of the nice wins here with the dogs to put some smiles on our faces.
You can’t help all the dogs or even come close but so much suffering has been eased this week…
1. The 500th Dog Was Sterilised
I make no secret that this is the most important thing I do. I started by doing them myself and now help with funding as many sterilisations as I can afford. Nothing stops the suffering and pain quicker than slowing down new puppies. It might not be the most glamorous part of what I do but it saves countless lives and suffering. This will only speed up from here.
2. Rodney Has A Forever Home
After battling to save his life and then building him back up Rodney now has a forever home. He had over 200 applications and my friends helped whittle it down to one wonderful forever home. He is getting his paperwork and tests in order and will be traveling to a lovely couple in Wales where he will go on big walks with his new brother. Rodney is currently shopping for a little rain jacket.
3. Miss Marple Is Getting Ready To Race
About a month ago I was called out to a dog that had been hit by a car and partially paralysed. She had been dragging herself around for some time and living in an abandoned house with glass all over the floor. After finding her specialised care, getting vet treatment and battling her blood parasites this week her gift arrived. Miss Marple was able to get fitted for her new wheelchair and she loves it. She is ready to go racing.
4. Sofia Escaped The Street Dog Life
Sofia had to battle against being dumped in the jungle. Her 2 siblings quickly died from Parvo. Then she contracted Parvo herself and had 4 days on a drip in the vets in isolation. She just about made it and then survived living under a shack. Last week I found her a foster home which quickly turned into a forever home as they instantly fell in love with her. She’ll never be back on the streets again.
5. Dozens Of Dogs Lives Improved With Preventative Medicines
From mange, fleas, ticks and fungal infections. The simple medicines administered to dozens of street dogs helped ease their suffering this week. This doesn’t cost a fortune but it eases so much needless suffering.
6. Hope Loves Her New Mum
Hope came in as a totally broken dog after being shot with a nail gun and badly abused. Here she is this week in her house waiting to travel to the UK. She absolutely loves her new mum, her bed, the sofa and the treats and walks she always goes on. They’ll travel together back to the UK.
7. King Whacker And Moritz Are About To Look For Their Homes
With Rodney, Little Squeak, Hope and Lottie on their way to forever homes it was decided this week that the next 2 to travel would be King Whacker and Moritz. They had their blood taken to be tested and the process has started. I will share details on how they can be adopted in the coming days. A small decision but utterly life changing for them.
8. Britney’s Puppies Are Fully Grown, Healthy And Sterilised
Probably my hardest rescue to date was Britney and her 5 puppies. While it took over 6 months to calm an aggressive Britney down her puppies all found forever homes around Thailand. This week it was a pleasure to see them all heading off to the vets to get sterilised. From the moment I found them in the jungle with 100s of ticks in each ear until now has taken huge effort and cost so it feels like the circle has been closed with them. A happy ever after story for all 6 dogs (including Britney).
9. Poppy Proves Dogs Know When You Help Them
Last week after 2 months of trying we were able to catch a fairly aggressive street dog for sterilising. I ended up calling her Poppy (because her ear popped up). When the vet team opened her up they found a very bad case of Pyometra that was about to kill her if left untreated. It was immediately after her operation that everything changed and she became super friendly.
10. The Dogs Are Famous In Australia
My whole mission is all about raising awareness about street dogs around the world and giving them a voice. The more people who know about the dogs and the struggles they face the better. You can see them feature on Australian TV here…
11. Giuseppe Got The Most Wonderful Send Off
While it might be sad losing a dog I only think of Giuseppe and his time with his fondly. His humans sat around with him and had ice creams and held his paws and head as he slipped away. I wrote about it here. Very few street dogs known such love and care as Giuseppe did in his last few months and that to me is a thing of happiness.
12. Over 5000 Meals Served To Happy Doggos Again This Week
I take this for granted a little bit now but there are 5000 times every single week where dogs around the island lick their lips at the fresh tasty food I am now able to provide them with.
13. Tina Is Looking Like An Actual Golden Retriever Again
When we first brought Tina in she was skin and bones. Most people wouldn’t even have known she was an actual Golden Retriever. It is amazing to see her now finally starting to look like one.
14. The Most Wonderful Gift
At the moment it is just a gravel track in the jungle but I saw Hope walking on it one day and thought it would be nice to give it a name. Something to remember her with but also a passage that once a dog travels down it their life changes forever. A lovely lady visited and brought the sign with her as a gift. Perfect.
As always none of this would be possible without so many people in both the real world and online. I feel like there are an army of people out there willing me on and supporting me. All I do is use that support and transfer it over to the dogs. It means so much to both me and them all.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Big love
Niall
