It is the question that I get asked multiple times per day from dog lovers all over the world who follow my little adventure. How can I help? I thought I’d first give a little update on what is happening and then share 4 ways in which anybody reading this can help save more dogs as part of the community…
Big Picture - Whats Happening?
I’ve been busy feeding 80 dogs per day and have now sterilised a total of 35.
There have also been endless vet visits, new puppy arrivals and regular illnesses. I share those all on social so best to follow them there.
I’ve been working on lots of stuff behind the scenes to push the project forward to the next level. Being Thailand things are a little slower than I would wish! These include…
Viewing land plots for a sanctuary
Incorporating a Foundation in Thailand (so as I can hire people, get volunteers and expand everything beyond just doing it myself)
Branding (coming in 2 weeks)
Finding partners to work with in the coming months
I feel in general I am doing good and saving lots of dog lives and preventing more coming into the world but I also need help to push things on. Here are 4 simple ways anybody can help…
1. Help Tell The Story
I like to share content about the the dogs. I hope that it changes people’s perception of street dogs and think about them more favourably. You can help the dogs by simply following one of the accounts or telling other dog lovers about them…
I keep a little list of the numbers. It might seem like a crazy goal but in a year I’d love to have 1 million people seeing super positive content about street dogs on a daily basis.
Content is a little bit more abstract when it comes to saving lives and helping improve living standards but I am positive it works on many levels by changing attitudes and shaping opinions especially with younger generations.
This audience is also the main way I can find homes for dogs right now so the bigger it is the more dogs I can re-home. You can help by simply introducing more people to the project on any of the channels above.
2. Direct Community Help
I started funding the project myself and still do. People have also been very generous in donating. Any donations help me to take emergency dogs to the vet, sterilise dogs and re-home others. They are all expensive things to do so not having to worry about the money is great and it literally directly saves lives day after day.
You can donate here. What would be really useful are any monthly donations (you can click on the monthly tab) as this allows me to plan for getting the land, building out the foundation and getting dogs adopted. Monthly donations help me think bigger about what I can do in the coming months.
You can also sub to this newsletter as an easy way to help.
I still cover all banking fees and obviously do everything myself for free to ensure that every single penny goes to the dogs.
3. A Crazy One - The Dog Book
I’ve been thinking in the last 2 weeks about creating a little book about the dogs. In short…
Short stories about 50 of the dogs everybody follows on a daily basis
A picture of each
Something for the coffee table / bathroom to flick through
Sell it with the proceeds helping more dogs
Have it available for this coming festive season (October)
I obviously already have enough on my plate but I was thinking I could either self fund it or find a partner to do it. I’d obviously need photos, editing and publishing help if anybody has contacts in those spaces or ideas about this. I think it could be a very meaningful and successful project for someone to be involved with.
4. I Need An Organiser
In the next couple of months I am going to need someone to come and join the project with me. I’m not going to save 10,000s of dogs alone and as anybody who does know me I am one of the most unorganised people in the world. Some of the areas where I need help…
Community management. There are currently 100s of messages every single day. These range from people checking up on specific dogs to offers of help that I need to answer. Helping manage this community is something I am struggling with from a time perspective.
Adoptions. I get a lot of requests about adoptions. That is something that can be done but it involves a lot of paperwork, flights, organising and planning. Not something I have a lot of time for.
General organising. Keeping track of documents and everything else it will take to make this work.
Online PR. Raising awareness about the dog project around the world
Video editing. Would be a bonus if someone had some basic skills in Instagram / TikTok / Youtube style editing but not totally essential.
This person could be based anywhere in the world. I could pay someone between $2000-3000 a month depending on skills. It would suit somebody who is passionate about dogs, maybe somebody working at home or looking to do something truly meaningful with their lives. I also wouldn’t rule out somebody coming to join me full time as a co-founder or long term partner on the project. I’m open to all ideas.
This is just me putting out the feelers. I won’t be able to do this until I am full set up as a foundation in Thailand but you might know someone or it could spark an idea in your own head.
This Is My Life’s Work And I’m Happy
I only started this project in late January but I really could not be happier with how it makes me feel on a daily basis. The only thing that annoys me is that haven’t done some things a little faster but I keep getting stretched with dog emergencies. It’s easy to say I’ll focus on the bigger picture but then you bump into 4 puppies without a mother and you get pulled in another direction.
The more I get into this the happier I am. I am dedicating the rest of my life, all the money I have and all my energy to street dogs around the world. There is a community of people here already who are helping and I love that feeling. I especially feel it on the tough days. It feels like there are people willing me and the dogs on. Thank you all very much indeed.
I hope you all have a great weekend and I promise to find more time to write and share happy stories here. Much love.
Niall
Niall, seeing you at the school, I thought inexpensive booklets with dog stories/heroes stickers to pass out for educating the school children on how great dogs are. Friends, protectors, comedians, etc. I agree that it needs to start young to change perceptions and conditioning.
This is more than likely on your mind for future sales.....tee shirts and caps! A simple artists rendition of you wearing your cap, peddling away on your bike with pups in a nap sack (actually your hidden cap:) on your back. Although I'm sure it was challenging, I love that picture of you saving the puppies while riding down the mountain on your motorbike! With "Journey Home, Niall's Dog Rescue" or whatever your branding highly visible. It would ship easily and advertisement could be international.
Twitter posts are great! Thank you again for all you are doing for the Thailand dogs!
Good luck on your journey. I'm currently on Koh Chang, Thailand working with Happy Dogs Shelter and it's tough right now, donations are low. The dogs keep us going though, we have a ton of love for our furry friends ❤️🐕
